Hydrogen generation from methanol..A European project that fights Shipping emissions
Shipbuilders and operators found what they wanted in the "Hi-Meth-Ship" Project for hydrogen generation from methanol that German Applied Research Institute..Fraunhofer.. pursued to develop in an attempt to curb the maritime transport sector emissions.
The project, funded by European Union, contributes to controlling the smoke plumes produced by fuel oil burning operations in the air that accompanies the maritime transport and shipping voyages by offeringgreen zero-emission trips.
Maritime transport sector emissions were estimated at 144 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2019, while data from the European Environment Agency indicated that maritime transport stands 3% behind the total carbon emissions in the Union,according to the German Fraunhofer Institute.

Since marine transport emissions are the fastest growing worldwide, endeavors to reduce them was the drive for attempts to search for environment-friendly operation systems. According to the specialized energy platform, it is the main technology on which 11Hi-Meth-Ship 11 is based on generating hydrogen from methanol.
Hydrogen generation technology from methanol has several advantages, primarily that it does not require that vessel to carry a vast hydrogen tank, which adds safety to the voyage.ln the meantime, project leaders find that italso attracts the attention of tourist ships.
In light of the rise inthe volume of trade exchange and the transfer of exports, maritime transport industry leaders should expand environment-friendly alternatives that secure safe fuel for the vessels operated byfuel oilor diesel.
The above prompted the European Parliament is request for shipping companies in 2020 to reduce their emissions at expedited rates in response to the pressures imposed on the maritime transport industry that threaten energy transmission and the European Green Deal.

The project of hydrogen generation from methanoi"Hi-Meth-Ship" for hydrogen generation from methanol is the optimal solution for saving maritime shipping operations during energy transmission. especially with the plans to apply the project's technology to other chemical industries.
To develop ship operation technologies. the 11Ship Solutions Emissionn Company conducted a limited-scale operational test in the Austrian city of lnnsbruck. under the supervision of the engine efficiency center. totest the feasibility of the European project technology.
The company's CEO revealed that the test confirmed the possibility of generating hydrogen from methanol.which would provide clean fuel for vessels.
The idea of generating hydrogen from methanol to provide fuel for maritime shipping vessels came after researchers from the German Fraunhofer Institute tried to innovate a fuel source that reduces emissions that can also be a safe source.
Concerning the project's operational technique in detail. the "Hi-Meth-Ship" project uses methanol carrying liquid hydrogen. Vessels are supplied with methanol before departure from ports and starting the sailing process. The treatment process is conducted to generate hydrogen from methanol based on steam. and these reactions result in clean, zero emissions fuel.

It works to reduce Shipping emissions and proposes the development of the idea of accompanying large-sized pressurized hydrogen tank onboard to provide clean fuel, but it may endanger it.
The reactor is the cornerstone of the project system.
The early steps begin with mixing methanol with water. vaporizing it with heat.and keeping it in the pre-heated reactor. During this stage, methanol and water mix is converted to hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Here comes the role of advanced technology of Fraunhofer Institute by developing the carbon coated membrane that hydrogen particles, whose micro-pores can stabilize hydrogen molecules. so that they can separate carbon dioxide molecules.
With this technology, hydrogen can be obtained with a purity of more than 90% and can be pumped by the engine to power vessels without emissions.
